Connecting Global Research and Education (R&E) network
Research and Education Network(R&E) is a specialized high-speed dedicated backbone network for supporting the needs of research and education communities. Thousands of R&E organizations are connected each other and share their Information on the network.
As one of the prime motives behind the registration of NREN, We are able to bring these networks in Nepal with the support of European Union and the government of Nepal. NREN has been involving on this EU funded Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN3) project on behalf of Nepal as a beneficiaries countries of south Asia along with Sri Lanka. India and Pakistan has already connected during its previous TEIN2 project, so Nepal and Sri Lanka are that latest beneficiaries of these network. The project is still ongoing and completed at the end of 2011.
With direct connectivity to Europe’s GEANT network, TEIN3 offers Asia-Pacific a gateway for global collaboration, enabling over 45 million users at more than 8000 research and academic centers to participate in joint project with their peers in Europe and other parts of the world.
Delivery of Advanced Network to Europe (DANTE), European Commission, National research and education networks (NRENs) of Europe and Asia are the partners of this project. Up to the statistics of 2010, TEIN3 already connects researcher and academics in China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia. Bangladesh, Bhutan and Cambodia are in the process of getting connected.
NREN has established 45Mbps TEIN3 connection with Asian, American and European R&E organization by this project. All of the R&E members of NREN have been experiencing this high speed network from Nepal. We are working to connect more research education institution in our single network which will provide gateway to access TEIN3.
High speed backbone for R&E Network:
NREN have initiated this program by the financial support of Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF) and In-Kind support from Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) USA. The project has built network infrastructure among research and education organization and distribute its 45 Mbps TEIN3 (Trans-Eurasia Information Network) links for the research and education communities of Nepal.
The project was initiated to improve and strengthen the existing network performance of research and education institution of Nepal. Low speed network, traditional network infrastructure, beyond from APAN (Asia Pacific Advanced Network), absence of our own local network and lack of resource optimization were the motives to implement this project.
As in the first phase of the project, twelve research and education institution, include colleges and research institution affiliated with Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University and Purbanchal University are connected on this high speed network. We have upgraded the existing network infrastructure of the selected institution by handovering network appliances, i.e., Switch and Router.
